Scene
Emerging and seasoned designers, celebrity stylists, fashion and beauty editors, actors, athletes, and industry icons came together with the fashion-hungry public for the highly anticipated Fashion & Beauty Week, held October 3-4, 2011 benefiting the Diabetes Research Institute. Beauty paired with fashion on the runway for an explosion of high-end designs and cutting-edge trends in beauty. Celebrity appearances, swag bags, the Bacardi/Grey Goose cocktail bar, silent auction and unique experiences like the Remy Cointreau VIP/Press lounge, Lord & Taylor Beauty Bar, and Qream Style Lounge made the event an affair to remember.
The evenings were complete with live entertainment like edgy and modern electric violinist Lorenzo Laroc and after-party band Time Machine, while hip hop culture icon DMC graced the stage for a surprise solo performance of “Walk This Way” – a most fitting finale for the end of opening night at the model strewn event.
Lights, Camera, Cosmetics! Hundreds indulged in the Lord & Taylor Beauty Bar for mini-makeovers and professional consultations from the top international cosmetic brands. Top brands Bobbi Brown, Clinique, Dior, Estee Lauder, Lancome, Laura Mercier, Nars, and Chanel created the glamorously chic beauty breezeway.
Beauty Trends from the Best in the Biz: Featuring the top salons in the state – 5 Salon & Spa, Avanti Day Resort, Bangz Salon & Wellness Spa, Cosmo Bleu, Hauro Noro, Julio Angel, Laborartory, Panico Salon & Spa, Salon Concrete, Salon Pure, Shag 86, The Gallery A Salon, and Vcsalon – the show brought stylists out from behind-the-scenes as a force to be reckoned with on the runway.

Fashion Fight for a Cure hosted by DePasquale from TheSalonGuy on Vimeo.
The 2nd Annual Fashion Fight for a Cure — a fashion show extravaganza hosted by DePasquale, The Spa — raised $90,000 for Cancer Care at Saint Clare’s October 2.
More than 400 supporters came to the Hanover Marriott to see five runway shows presented by DePasquale hair stylists and beauty experts, who worked on the benefit as volunteers.
“This is just an outstanding event for us,” said Les Hirsch, president and CEO at Saint Clare’s Health System. “I’m awestruck to see all the people here today. We couldn’t do it without all of you, especially with the challenges in medical care today.”
He noted that last year Fashion Fight for a Cure raised $60,000.
Judges awarded best of show to Team Whimsy, featuring fanciful retro Barbie looks, including made-from-real-hair hair accessories. Each model on the team, including Miss New Jersey Teen USA Savannah Schechter, emerged from a pink, human-sized doll box.
Also presenting shows with different themes were Team Europa, Team Explosive Youth, Team Millennium, and I Do Do.
“There are no losers here today,” said Justin DePasquale, co-owner and director of the DePasquale spa and salon in Morris Plains, and creator of the event. “Everyone involved is helping bring attention to cancer and raise money for Saint Clare’s.”
DePasquale had lots of people to thank. In addition to the work of the stylists and beauty experts, the 2nd Annual Fashion Fight for a Cure drew 18 sponsors. Money was raised in other ways, large and small, ranging from pink hair extensions for a $10 donation to a 50/50 raffle with a winning pot of $10,000 and a mink stole auction.
Even salon employees who didn’t work on a runway show participated, according to DePasquale. Behind the scenes, employees were responsible for stuffing swag bags, creating signage, and working the reception tables as well as the model room.
Others in the crowd of supporters, who each bought a $75 ticket, included Assemblyman Alex DeCroce and Gail Solomon of Convent Station.
“It’s a fantastic cause,” Solomon said. “Breast cancer used to be a definite killer. Now, because of research, it’s curable, and they all should be.”
The event was created in honor of Dr. David DePasquale, a doctor at Saint Clare’s who succumbed to a rare sarcoma almost two years ago at age 42. The doctor, whose family attended the event, was a cousin of Justin DePasquale.
The second annual event also paid tribute to Tatyana Petrushkevich of Wharton, an aesthetician at DePasquale’s for the past 15 years who died of colon and breast cancers this past March at age 50.
Petrushkevich was an only child who emigrated from Estonia by herself in 1991 in search of a better life, according to Vicky Hart, a salon client who spoke at Fashion Fight for a Cure about the cancer journey of the manicurist and skin specialist. The two women grew so close that Hart helped Petrushkevich throughout her entire illness, along with other DePasquale clients and employees.
“I thank Tatyana for the gift of being able to help her,” said a tearful Hart.
Erica Citarelli of Morris Plains, a DePasquale employee and event volunteer, remembered Petrushkevich.
“She was ill for three years and came to work every day, even after chemotherapy. She fought to the end,” said Citarelli, recalling one Sunday when the salon opened and offered discounted services to clients. The event raised $20,000 to help pay Petrushkevich’s medical bills.
DePasquale pointed out the giving involved in staging Fashion for a Cure is not unusual for the beauty industry.
“We make people feel beautiful every day,” he said. “By doing that, people become so giving. Beauty can cure. That’s the biggest theme here.”
Guest judges for the event were: Alisa Maria, CEO of Celebrity Stylist; Judi Rothenberg, lifestyle and travel editor of NJ Savvy Living; Stephen Marinaro, The Salon Guy; Grace Gold, beauty expert and writer; Maggie Mulhern, beauty and fashion director of Modern Salon Media; and Lorraine Ash, staff writer at the Daily Record.
For 2012, DePasquale will be the official salon for Miss New Jersey USA and Miss New Jersey Teen USA.

New York, NY. September 2011. Ask publisher Ryan Chua where he got the divine inspiration for ASTONISH Magazine and he will tell you to look no further than your local newsstand. Month after month magazines line the newsstands packed with the same tired fashion editorials and banal commentary – one indistinguishable from the next. ASTONISH Magazine embodies its name – it astonishes readers with brave, edgy original images chosen purely for their visual merit. It is the answer to an industry starved for smart, unique, and visually stimulating Fashion & Art content. This category defying publication is not merely a high-end print magazine, but a multi-media platform for emerging artists to showcase their talent in a global spotlight. Its goal is to inspire, reinvent, and revolutionize the fading publication industry.
The wait will be over come September, when ASTONISH Magazine debuts with a truly unique Fashion Show Launch Party. In conjunction with the Seven Bar Foundation, fashion insiders and celebrities alike will come together to view Phuong My’s new couture collection. Proving once again that ASTONISH Magazine is more than just another pretty face on the newsstand – it brings together the present and future creative talents. A celeb-studded event, guests will include major Fashion Stylists, Editors and Insiders, as well as popular actors, musicians and reality television stars. Guests will enjoy hip cocktails by Sakiri Vodka, delicious wine by Biso Moscato and Wines, mediterranean snacks by Bite Size New York and gourmet confections by Luxx Chocolat, all whilst dancing to the tunes of DJ Jay McElfresh.
ASTONISH chose Phuong My because she embodies an essential mission of the magazine: to inspire, redefine, and revolutionize the Fashion and Publication Industry by giving focus to the best emerging Fashion Artists working today. Vietnam born Phuong My has already proved her Fashion Credentials and stunned the style cognoscenti in San Francisco, New York City and Asia, being featured in top tier Fashion Shows such as the Women’s Mafia Spring ’11 Mercedes Benz Fashion Week Show and BLACK V in San Francisco. This Summer Phuong My is being honored as the closing Fashion Show designer for Tokyo’s Fashion Week event, featuring Miss Japan and Miss Universe contestants.
Her work has recently been seen in prestigious publications such as Italian Vogue, Elle Vietnam, Haute Magazine, Asterisk Magazine, Truxury Magazine and more. As a Stylist and Art Director, she has already been tapped for Elle Vietnam and Harper’s Bazaar Vietnam. Her work will be featured in Vogue Mexico as well as Harper’s Bazaar’s first issue in Vietnam this Summer.
Despite an abundance of reality shows, books, and movies centered around the fashion publication world, it still remains opaque to those outside of it. ASTONISH is unique in that it invites emerging artists (photographers, stylists, fashion designers, models and collaborators) to submit their work for each issue. Every issue is defined by a theme, Issue One being: Love Lust Desire. From there, submitting artists have complete creative freedom to interpret the theme in their work. Unlike other overly commercialized publications, ASTONISH is a movement uniting artists and their work under the ASTONISH curatorial eye. With stunning imagery, insightful social commentary, and interviews with industry professionals, ASTONISH delivers a powerful experience to its readers.
While so many magazines these days talk at their readers, ASTONISH seeks to have a dialogue with their readers. While there is no substitute for the tactile experience of the print magazine, visionary developer Richard McWilliams is making sure the ASTONISH experience continues in the digital realm. Online, ASTONISH will not only feature videos, behind the scenes featurettes, and beautiful premium images, but a unique online community that will keep the illuminating dialogue going. In addition to this, McWilliams, who acts as Chief Technology Office, will soon be introducing a revolutionary way to connect with the global fashion community with the new version of AstonishMagazine.com in the Fall. ASTONISH Magazine truly embraces the innate qualities of the print and digital forms and seeks to bring a modern approach to delivering the finest fashion and art masterpieces to their readers. As the first print magazine created for the digital age ASTONISH provides a unique opportunity for advertisers. With innovative all-encompassing advertising plans, ASTONISH advertisers will reach influential readers wherever they go, from the page to the computer screen and beyond.
Gearing up for its hotly anticipated inaugural issue in the Fall; ASTONISH’s digital magazine and blog content is already read in over 30 countries. With a core base of readers that are fashion students and industry professionals from around the globe – its appeal extends to all those who desire a serious career in the fashion industry. The ASTONISH reader includes aspiring and established photographers, fashionistas, bloggers, stylists, models, designers, and anyone who has been searching for the visually stimulating magazine that this industry has been missing. With an ever-growing audience, the ASTONISH team plans to capture 50,000 new readers with each quarterly issue of the magazine – with as many visits to the online site per month. Join the movement, be a creative leader of the future, and prepare yourself to be astonished when ASTONISH Magazine ushers in the new era of publication in September.
Astonish Magazine has headquarters around the world, from San Francisco to New York and Europe. Read the first issue and become a part of the movement at www.astonishmagazine.com.

TheSalonGuy at Seasons of Style Jersey Shore Beauty Academy Fashion Show 2011 from TheSalonGuy on Vimeo.
I was invited down to the Seasons of Style Jersey Shore Beauty Academy Fashion Show 2011 by Owners Michael and Jenny Schmidt and I was so happy I was there. Future Professionals had the opportunity to show their talents by creating styles and looks based of all of the 4 seasons. Winter, Spring, Summer and Fall. They created various Hairstyles and fashions to match the seasons and I was blown away by the pure talent they displayed. They worked so hard and it showed on the runway. Here is more information on the event.

Official Be-Cause Kick Off Charity Event Video founded by Millennium from TheSalonGuy on Vimeo.
Be IN with the Be-Cause – IN NYC that is. If you were one of the lucky ones to attend Millennium’s first ever Be-Cause kick off charity event then you already know that it was a huge success. About two hundred and forty five invited beauty professionals came together at the beautiful Tela Design Studio in New York City to support the Be-Cause and celebrate being more. Guests were able to rub elbows with some of the industries biggest names including Ted Gibson, Gayle Giacomo, Brig Van Osten, Angie Katsanevas, George Ortiz, Donald Francis, Philip Pelusi, Carmen Depasquale, Justin Depasquale, Marco Pelusi, Matt Beck, April Barton, Brian Buterbaugh, TJ Romeland, David Evangelista, Amy Michleb, John Harms and more.
Red carpet interviews, model presentations, and flashes from photographers, resembled a scene from the Oscars or Emmy’s. The mood was light and fun as people everywhere spoke to their “Be” word. “My word is be authentic,” says President and CEO of Millennium Salon Software & Founder of the Be-Cause. “I try to be a real leader and person that people can trust.”
In efforts to raise money for Beauty Changes Lives it is no doubt that Millennium Salon Software, founders of the Be-Cause, did everything possible to make this an unforgettable night. Their hard work paid off; the event helped raise thousands of dollars towards sending students to beauty school. John Harms is passionate about making an impact on the industry, “The future of our industry lies in our students and I am grateful to be able to help make a difference.”
Stay tuned for video and pictures on the Millennium Salon Software Facebook page (http://www.facebook.com/MilenniumbyHarms) or by checking out the Be-Cause website at www.dontjustbe.com.
