The mushroom cut (or the bowl cut) has historically been common in cultures throughout the world. The name “mushroom cut” came from the simply concept that the hairstyle looked like a mushroom top, but the “bowl cut” was the original name because individuals literally would achieve this look by putting a pot on his or her head and cutting off any hair that hung below the edge of the pot. Depending on the culture this look either symbolized poverty or wealth, which is just one way in which this look can be very diverse!
The mushroom cut sparked popularity in the United States in the 1980s due to the popularity of the Ramones’ (a punk rock band whose members “rocked” this look). The Ramones’ sparked interested in teenage boys, which continued to stay a trend through the 1990s.
While the trend was popular for men, women were also able to sport this look, and do it well.
The mushroom cut is a low maintenance hairstyle that again is very diverse, as it can work for both men and women!
No product is necessary in styling this look, but the use of a cream pomade such as Shadow would add a light shine while holding your hair in place.
